Engl 1102 - assignment for Tuesday, Jan 27

Hi folks:

Here's the work for next class.

Topic Research: Find 3 (or more) short articles/opinions/arguments from “credible” sources about your favorite topic. (Journal articles from library databases, books/chapters from books, developed articles/ op-eds from reliable newspapers/magazines -- NOT material from a website like About.com/Wikipedia.
Also, be prepared to do some group work with your topic selections. We'll break up to help one another think through what topics might work best for a semester-long project.

  • Read your first essay assignment that was just e-mailed to you.

  • Read Chapter 10 in your textbook. Check this blog and watch for Blackboard as syllabus and assignment materials become available.

  • Use your textbook (Chapters 10, 13, plus the index) AND the library database to find and write short definitions for these argument elements:
  1. The purpose

  2. Claim (including claims of fact, value, policy). The main claim is called the __________?Evidence: what does evidence do?

  3. Rebuttals/counterarguments

  4. Audience appeals: name and define the three major types of appeals

I am interested in one of the example topics you listed. Could that be one of my possible topics that I write this entire year about(automobile industry)?

Hi Danielle -- yes, you can work with any topics you like, provided they're not the huge "hot button" topics. In class, this week, we'll talk about topics and what makes for good ones, what offers less opportunity, etc.

Any questions you have along the way, you know to raise with me at any point.
