Evaluative How To's

Howdy everyone,

As you know from our classes and conversations, the best way to write a review or evaluative essay -- in addition to following the book's directions -- is to read plenty of samples from the genre in which you're working.

That said, I took a few moments to look up some POSSIBLE sites that might be of help. (I say possible because I've not looked them over carefully.)

If your essay isn't an exact fit, you may still find some useful tips in a similar category.

Here are a few. Click on the titles below:

How to write a product review

Hopefully, some of these will help. Be sure to check the post below about evaluative writing in general. As always, post questions on the blog or write me.

I read the how to write a product blog. My paper is about my car. I noticed that the "how to" kept emphasizing know who your audience is. I remember you saying in class that our audience will be college students and you. If my paper basically is focused on college students, and not techinically "you" is that okay?

Also, I noticed that in one part of the "how to" you said the reader is not concerned about you, the evaluation is for them. Does that mean it would be wrong if I inluded a sentence that says " As a college student, I enjoy the Mitsubishis’ refreshing style, performance and comfort as I travel each day; especially during my hour drive to college. After a tough day, this dependable fun-to-drive car gives me an exciting release, as most college students need. " Should I try to improve this sentence or is this okay?

Thank you

Howdy - great question.

That sentence is great and the audience can absolutely be geared toward just college students.

Besides, I ride a donkey to work!

I am doing a cruise line review on the Royal Caribbean Cruise I went on. Many of the reviews I have read are broken into different sections and then those are reviewed, am I allowed to do that? For example,it will have the heading ENTERTAINMENT and then under that it will review all the entertainment and things to do on the ship. Then it will have DINING and review the dining experience is this acceptable to do in my paper?

Amanda: absolutely! Think of your audience, get away from thinking this must be an "academic" essay. That's exactly why I wanted you to read plenty of reviews from the same genre -- that research tells you a lot about your target audience.

We write for a target audience.

So, write for them, using subheaders, bulleted lists, etc. Whatever you find to be the most effective means of imparting your evaluation to your readers.

Great questions.
